Who is tremper longman

So when I went off to seminary, I was hoping that God would lead me to an academic ministry, but I did not know in what area. He got me very excited about the field and encouraged and mentored me, so I went off to Yale to do a doctorate in ancient Near Eastern studies. After I finished classwork in , I joined Ray who sadly died at an early age in on the faculty at Westminster Theological Seminary.

I taught there until , when I accepted the Robert H. First I would say that my experience as a biblical scholar has been a wonderful one, and I understand why someone may want to go into biblical scholarship. But I would be quick to say that I was fortunate, entering the filed at a time when teaching opportunities, while never abundant, were more available.

So my first bit of advice would be a word of caution. Know what you are going to do if a tenured faculty position is not available for you. In preparation for doctoral studies, get a broad liberal arts education.

A biblical scholar has to be a historian, a literary scholar, a linguist, an anthropologist, and more. In seminary, I would suggest taking the MDiv degree especially if you want to or are open to teaching at a seminary. Many seminaries will want to see their faculty have pastoral experience of some sort since they will be teaching future pastors.

Then I would suggest going to the best doctoral program possible, and in most cases a non-evangelical program. Love and be with your family, get involved in your church, hone your relational skills. Most importantly, make sure you have a deep relationship with God. Be a well rounded, healthy person. I retired from the Robert H. I retired a bit earlier than normal so we could move from California to Alexandria, Virginia to be closer to our three sons and our six granddaughters.

I also knew I could maintain an active professional life by writing and teaching at various institutions.
